An introduction to Philippine linguistic map.
The Philippines is an archipelago comprising of 7,100 islands. Although not all of these islands are inhabited, the demographic picture paints a rather populous country with an interesting linguistic mix.
Filipino is the language which serves as the national language. It is based on Tagalog but also includes contributions from other major languages such as Cebuano-Visayan, Ilocano, and the other local dialects.
The influence of Spanish and English are evident specially in the spoken Filipino. This interesting element may be explained by the fact that the Philippines has been a former colony of Spain and the USA. Besides, Filipino is a developing language so that linguistic borrowings and assimilation take place as Fiipino encounters other languages in use. |
